Artist roles and collaborators

Roles describe what each person did on your music. They aren't account access permissions: they're the credits that travel with the release to the platforms.

Where they're assigned

In two places, with the same mechanics:

• On the release, for the overall attribution.
• On each track, to credit the people who worked on that song.

You use the Add Artist with Roles button, and Manage Roles to change them.

Adding an artist with roles

1. Click Add Artist with Roles.
2. Pick an artist from your list (or create it on the spot).
3. Add one or more roles for that person.
4. Save.

You can't repeat the same role for the same artist. You can give them several different roles.

Role types

The catalog is organized by category: creative (composer, lyricist, arranger), performance (primary artist, featured, vocals, backing vocals), instruments (guitar, piano, drums…), technical (producer, mixing, mastering) and business.

Primary artist and "Various Artists"

Keep 3 primary artists at most per track (4 on a single). With more, Spotify shows the track as "Various Artists". Move the rest to Featured artist / Featuring.

Legal name required

If you assign the Composer, Lyricist or Producer roles, that artist needs a full legal name in their profile (or each member's, for a group).

Roles and royalties

Some roles take part in the split and carry a suggested percentage, adjusted in the release's Automatic splits.
