Master vs. composition

Two different rights over the same song.

Updated 1 day ago

Every song has two separate rights, with different owners and different royalties.

Master (recording)

It's the specific performance you hear. Its owner is usually the artist or the label.

It generates the recording royalties (streaming, downloads), which are the ones UXEM distributes.

Composition (work)

It's the music and lyrics, regardless of who records them. Its owners are the songwriter(s) and their publisher.

It generates the author (publishing) royalties, which are collected through collection societies and publishing administration.

How they combine

The same song can have one master owner and several songwriters with percentages.

UXEM always distributes the recording. The composition side is handled separately through publishing administration (see What publishing administration is).
