Samples, interpolations and remixes

What authorizations you need in each case.

Updated 1 day ago

Sample

You use a fragment of another song's recording. You need two permissions:

  • From the master owner (sample clearance).
  • From the composition owner.

Interpolation

You re-record or reinterpret part of someone else's composition (a melody, a progression, a phrase) without using the original recording. You need permission from the composition owner.

Remix of a third-party track

You start from another artist's stems or recording. You need the express authorization of that recording's owner, and usually of the composition too. The remix is credited with the remixer role and carries its own ISRC.

If you don't have the permissions

Review can reject the release, and a platform can claim or remove it. Keep each authorization in writing: you may be asked for it.
